Glasgow has discovered a winter transport policy with the radical feature of being quite fun. From Monday 2 November, City Sightseeing’s red open-top buses will carry up to three children free with each fare-paying adult. The top deck has checked the family group chat and accepted everybody.

The offer covers children aged 15 and under and is advertised to run until 31 March 2027. Children under five already travelled free, so the useful new bit is the disappearance of the child fare for older children within the three-seat allowance. One adult ticket is £20 for one day or £27 for two consecutive days. Additional child tickets are listed at £11 and £16 respectively.

This is a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing route rather than a municipal bus wearing a jaunty scarf. The full circuit takes about 90 minutes and has 24 stops across the city centre, West End, south side and Clyde. Kelvingrove, Riverside Museum, Glasgow Cathedral, the Science Centre, the Govan Stones and Glasgow Green are all on or close to the route. Several of those attractions are free, which gives a family day out the rare and elegant possibility of ending before the bank app begins coughing.

From Sunday 1 November, the operator says buses leave George Square every 30 minutes, with the first departure at 10am and the last at 4pm. The timetable varies by stop and season, and one current stop at Tennent’s Brewery is unavailable, so checking the live route before marching three children towards a bus is still the sort of glamour I endorse.

The buses have recorded commentary in seven languages and each vehicle has one wheelchair space on the lower deck. That single space is worth checking ahead if it is essential to the trip. The upper deck offers the more cinematic view, along with authentic Glasgow weather applied directly to the face.

The practical arithmetic is simple. A paying adult can bring up to three children aged 15 or under without adding child fares, then use the route to link museums, city landmarks and winter events. The operator’s booking page was live during this check and displayed the offer beside current prices and the winter timetable.

I have not taken this winter offer for a test drive and cannot certify the exact angle at which a scarf becomes airborne on Clyde Street. What I can confirm is that the deal is newly posted, the conditions are published and the buses are taking bookings. Playing tourist in your own city is already a lovely habit. Doing it with three children travelling free is practically continental.
